Sex Therapy

Sex is an important part of life, and it can also be a source of stress, anxiety and disappointment. Sexual difficulties can have physical, psychological, and relationship causes, and often a mix of all three.

Sex therapy is talk therapy focused on sexual health and intimacy. Our approach is accepting and positive, and always aims to help you meet your goals in a way that fits your values, taking small steps toward bigger ones.

Who it's for

Individuals and couples experiencing sexual difficulties or dissatisfaction. You can come on your own or with a partner.

Common concerns

  • Low desire, or different levels of desire between partners
  • Difficulty getting or keeping an erection
  • Premature or delayed ejaculation
  • Difficulty reaching orgasm
  • Pain during sex, or difficulty with penetration
  • Sexual or performance anxiety
  • Shame, including spiritual shame, and sexual repression
  • Sexual trauma
  • Difficulty talking about sex with a partner
  • Relationship problems that affect intimacy

What to expect

In the first session your therapist assesses the concern and how it affects your life or relationship. They will ask about your sexual history, your current sexual practices and any relevant medical or psychological issues.

The number of sessions depends on your needs and goals.

How we work

Sessions draw on a range of techniques, chosen with you. Depending on your goals, that can include exploring the thoughts and values behind your concerns, education about sexual anatomy and physiology, mindfulness to ease anxiety, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), sensate focus exercises, communication skills for you and your partner, and exercises that build toward larger goals.
